Buildings and Pits

At the conclusion of four summers of field investigations, a tremendous quantity of new information has been recovered that will help inform us about life at Martin’s Hundred at the end of the seventeenth century. The excavations yielded evidence a minimum of four earthfast structures that were part of the Atkinson houselot, as well as a wide array of middle to late seventeenth-century artifacts, animal bone, and botanical remains from across the site. Although the analysis of the excavation findings from the Atkinson site are currently underway, some preliminary interpretations have been formulated. The following section summarizes some of the most significant discoveries and interpretations based on the past four seasons of research.
