Reports

Though much of the department's research consists of expanding our general knowledge of early American architecture, we frequently investigate highly specific, targeted subjects. We typically publish this more focused work in the form of an internal report. The most common type of this report is a house survey but we have also prepared much more comprehensive documents, like our study of Structure 144 at Jamestown, as well as much more esoteric ones, like our brief paper on early painted brickwork.

In addition, the department has prepared two field guides for tours of early American buildings. The first was for the 2001 meeting of the Vernacular Architecture Forum and was limited to the Chesapeake region. The second was for the North American tour of the English Vernacular Architecture Group and covered a much wider area, from New England through the Delaware Valley to the Chesapeake. The field guides and research reports are all available here.

The reports are given in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). When you click on the Download button on the download page, they will open in a separate window. You may save, print, or simply read the document at this point.

As part of an on-going effort by the Foundation to complete digitization of all research work, these reports are being gradually converted into XML (Extensible Markup Language) and will be available for full-text searching in Colonial Wiliamsburg's Digital Library.
