This creamware teapot proudly proclaims its owner’s opposition to the Stamp Act. Each side is
painted in brownish red glaze with “No Stamp Act” within a cartouche of leaf scrolls and
flowers. Manufactured in England, presumably for export to the American colonies after the repeal of the Stamp
Act, this unusual piece is one of only a handful of examples known to survive today. The importance of the
colonial North American market to British industry is reflected in the decision to make a product
expressing opposition to a British law. Following the American Revolution, British industry continued
to profit by manufacturing products designed to appeal to American political beliefs, including consumer
items decorated with eagles or George Washington.
