This large silk embroidered and painted map sampler depicting the city of Washington, D.C. was
made circa 1800-1804 by Eve Resler, a local girl of around seventeen. The sampler includes a
detailed street map, painted allegorical figures of “Hope,” “La Liberty,”
and “Justice,” and an embroidered portrait bust of George Washington. The
accompanying inscription reads “GEORGE WASHINGTON/ First President of the United
States/ and late LIEUTENANT GENERAL of the / American
Armies/ Died at Mount Vernon 14th Dec. 1799 Aged 68 Years.” This sampler reflects the
extent to which national pride in the early republic permeated all aspects of popular culture.
