The following reading lists feature classic histories and recent monographs selected
by historians in this department to complement the six story lines around which the
Foundation’s Becoming Americans central theme is organized. We recommend these
titles to our interpreters, to teachers who use the published Becoming
Americans education plan in their classrooms, and to general readers who are eager
to learn more about early America and colonial Virginia. Periodically our scholars
refresh the list with important new additions to an ever growing literature. Recommended
readings are divided into sections that correspond to the arrangement of research themes.
