Tradesmen in the Virginia Gazette
Note: This project was undertaken by Digital History Center
intern Laura Manville, then an undergraduate at Yale University, in the
summer of 2005.
The objective of the Tradesmen Project is to compile a list of
men and women practicing trades in Virginia in the 1700s. Currently,
the research is focusing on advertisements placed by and for tradespeople
in the Virginia Gazette. Each advertisement is saved as a digital
image file, and the name, occupation, role and location of the tradesman
or tradeswoman is entered into a database. The number of times a
certain advertisement is placed, as well as the number of advertisements
each tradesperson places, is also being kept track of. We can combine
these different pieces of information to better understand spatial
and economic relationships, as well as interpersonal linkages, in
colonial Virginia.
